HEY SHAUNA ART THERAPY WORKSHOPS
Groups are small, generally 5-6 people.
MAYBE PROBABLY NOT A MOTHER
Workshop and conversation group on the topic of choosing (or considering) NOT to become a mother.
This is going to become a regular thing …with ongoing (drop-in) dates …for regular support, conversation, creative processing, and ongoing opportunities to meet other women who are also struggling with (or looking for support around) this sometimes VERY difficult, and always VERY big decision.
Choosing to not have a child is a legitimate choice. And you may feel alone, but you’re not.
Excerpt from Sheila Heti’s book Motherhood:
“Some people try to imagine what it’s like to not have children – and they imagine themselves without children, instead of picturing a person they might never be. They project their own potential sadness over not having this experience on those who don’t want it at all. A person who can’t understand why someone doesn’t want children only has to locate their feelings for children, and imagine that desire directed somewhere else – to a life that is just as filled with hope, purpose, futurity and care.”
PATCHWORK, VISIBLE MENDING & AUTONOMY
We will explore ideas around “visible mending” as a metaphor for considering our flaws, broken bits & wounds. Adorning our imperfections. Strengthening our understanding of our needs, and supporting (and reinforcing) our capacities to repair and connect …and find our voices. Patchwork as a feminist act.
INTRO TO ART THERAPY & CREATIVE PROCESS
This group will give participants an experiential introduction to the practice and theory of art therapy – and to an assortment of different art materials and ways of using them, both individually and collaboratively.
DILLY-DALLYING & MAP-MAKING
This workshop will combine meandering, foraging (squishing & smearing) in Stanley Park, with watercolour & stitching on a blanket at Second Beach …and watching the sun set!
We’ll talk about map-making and how we can expand our understanding of what that means – who makes them, what sort of information can be found in them, and who they’re for. And we’ll each work on creating a map of our walk and adventure together.
WALKING, FORAGING & WEAVING
We’ll start by wandering & foraging together in Stanley Park (in and around English Bay and Second Beach), and then we’ll gather with our found nature bits and other yarns and materials from my studio – and create our own weavings together, on the beach, while watching the sun set!
DROP-IN GROUP: CREATIVE PROCESS
For those interested in an ongoing group and implementing a regular creative practice (studio time!). This group will be running regularly, and can be attended on a drop-in basis (whenever works for you, no need to make it to every one!). We’ll be working with a wide assortment of materials (traditional and otherwise), processes, collaborations, and personal projects. We’ll start each group with something collaborative, and then shift into whatever personal project you would like to work on.
Materials are included, but you are of course welcome to bring anything additional that you want to work with as well.
PLEASE NOTE: This group is for women 35 years +.
This is a space to discuss, consider and make art around our experiences of aging. And all of the sometimes unsettling, sometimes liberating, and sometimes curious parts of that.
We will get into ways of accessing and supporting a creative process –personally and within a group, through tactile and process-grounded exploration of materials. And we’ll share two hours together, creating, laughing, maybe crying (because… well, Menopause), and mucking about with art materials.
This is a group that I will be running on the regular. Where we can continue to explore, create, and support each other. Please consider purchasing a punch card (for a reduced fee) and coming regularly ….because, community! And women supporting women!!
SEAWEED FORAGING & PRESSING
I’m VERY excited to announce that I will be hosting another seaweed pressing workshop led by the lovely Dana Mulder (Instagram: @strawberryblondedana)!
Dana will start with a short talk about some of the different seaweed varieties, ecology, and tips around ethical collecting & harvesting. Then we’ll learn how to press and preserve the special varieties of seaweeds that she will be bringing back with her from Galiano Island!
You will create 3 mounted pieces, made from a variety of beeaauutiful West Coast seaweed specimens of different shapes, colours & sizes!
Space is limited so please be sure to register early.
All materials, tea & sparkling water will be provided.
SINGLE WORKSHOP $45
PUNCH CARD (BUNDLE OF 5) WORKSHOPS $175
